Hey fellow travel enthusiasts! Mark here, your friendly neighborhood American backpacker, ready to share my recent incredible adventure in Kumamoto, Japan. This trip was jam-packed with stunning landscapes, delicious food, and unforgettable experiences. If you're planning a trip to Asia and love a mix of nature, culture, and relaxation, read on! I'm spilling all the details on how you can have a similar amazing time in Kumamoto.
Day 1: Arrival and Aso's Culinary Delights
My Kumamoto adventure kicked off at Kumamoto Airport. I opted for a self-drive tour, which I highly recommend for exploring the region at your own pace. After grabbing my rental car (convenient shuttle from the airport!), I headed straight for lunch. Based on Google reviews, I chose "Fuyōan Kakurega," a family-run restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. I indulged in a delicious black hair wagyu beef and a pork cutlet set meal – both were incredible!
After a satisfying meal, I checked into my hotel for the night, the Kumamoto Aso Wanfu Hotel. It was the perfect base for exploring Aso.
Day 2: Aso Volcano – A Breathtaking Aerial View
The next morning, I was ready for the highlight of my trip: Aso Volcano! I started with a thrilling helicopter ride over the Kusasenkiryō grasslands, offering breathtaking views of the vast volcanic landscape. The helicopter's gentle hum was almost as captivating as the scenery itself. The seven-minute flight was absolutely worth it! I even saw a stunning "Jesus beam" on my return flight. Such a mystical and unforgettable moment!
After landing, I spent some time exploring Kusasenkiryō, taking in the scenery from different angles. Later, I journeyed to the Aso volcanic crater itself. The sheer scale and power of the volcano were awe-inspiring. The vibrant colors of the landscape were amazing, and I made sure to take tons of pictures to capture the moment. I continued my journey, stopping at the scenic "Aso Bōkyō Kugiyama" roadside station. I had a unique and delicious lunch of local charcoal-grilled cuisine at "Takamori Denraku no Sato," savoring the taste of authentic Kumamoto flavors (the beef was definitely better than the chicken!). That evening, I relaxed at the luxurious Senbon Plateau Hotel, enjoying a delightful buffet dinner and soaking up the breathtaking views.
Day 3: Waterfalls, Panoramic Views, and Dolphin Encounters
My third day began with a refreshing hike to the gorgeous Nagae Falls in the Nagatake Park. The experience of walking behind the cascading waterfall was truly unique and invigorating. I continued my journey, making a stop at the Nishitoyoura Park Observatory to take in more stunning panoramic views.
The highlight of my day, and one of the highlights of my entire trip, was an unforgettable encounter with dolphins in Amakusa. After exchanging my tickets and grabbing a quick snack, I boarded the boat and set sail. Despite the windy and cold weather, the heated cabin kept me warm. After about a 30-minute boat ride, we finally encountered a pod of playful dolphins. Seeing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat was truly magical, and it lasted around 40 minutes. It was a heartwarming experience that I will always remember. After watching the sunset from the sea, I made my way back to Kumamoto city. That night, I stayed at The Blossom Kumamoto Hanahira Hotel, which boasts spectacular views of the city from the rooms and had a delicious breakfast buffet the next morning.
Day 4: City Exploration and Departure
My last day was dedicated to exploring Kumamoto city. I started with a visit to Kumamoto Castle (though it's under renovation, the grounds are still beautiful!) and then took a stroll through Sakura Machi, marveling at the stunning golden ginkgo trees. The golden hue lining the streets was truly captivating!
After this, I made my way to the airport, taking with me unforgettable memories of my Kumamoto adventure.
