Hey everyone, Mark here! As a seasoned backpacker with a passion for exploring Asia's incredible landscapes, I'm always on the hunt for breathtaking adventures. Recently, I embarked on a trip to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in Japan, and let me tell you, it was an experience that surpassed all expectations. This isn't just another scenic route; it's a journey through a wonderland of snow, mountains, and stunning natural beauty. If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure in Japan, then this needs to be on your list.
Starting the Adventure: From Toyama to the Majestic Mountains
My journey began at the Toyama Station, the starting point of this epic adventure. I stayed at the conveniently located DoubleTree by Hilton Toyama, just a three-minute walk from the station. I woke up super early at 4:30 AM to a surprisingly long queue already forming at the station – talk about popular! By 4:40 AM, I was ready to join the throngs of fellow adventurers.
The journey started with a train ride. I bought a ticket from the station. Let me tell you, the staff there were super helpful. The ticket from Tateyama to Ogizawa costs ¥12,170 per person. It's advisable to check the train schedule before you go! I managed to secure tickets for the 11:50 AM cable car, a massive relief after seeing the lines. Before boarding the train, I took advantage of the luggage forwarding service to send my bags to Shinano Omachi Station (¥3,000 per bag). It’s essential to arrive at Shinano Omachi Station before 5:45 PM to retrieve them on the same day.
A Breathtaking Journey Through Diverse Landscapes
The one-hour train ride from Tateyama Station to Toyama Station was breathtaking. The views of snow-capped mountains, even after three days exploring Toyama Prefecture, were simply stunning. Many passengers were sound asleep, likely exhausted from the early start, but I couldn't tear my eyes away.
Upon arrival at Tateyama Station, I explored the small yet charming station building. It houses a cozy restaurant, a Mont-Bell store, and a souvenir shop – perfect for a quick pit stop. I even stopped to admire the "Bear King's Water," a renowned spring. Checking the real-time live feed of Murodo and the Snow Wall was super cool!
Into the Heart of Winter: The Snow Wall of Murodo
At 11:50 AM, it was time for the highlight of the day: the Tateyama Ropeway! The seven-minute ride through tunnels provided a gradual unveiling of the snow-covered mountain scenery, building up the anticipation. Seeing the snow mountains was amazing.
The next leg of the journey was the Tateyama Kogen Bus to Murodo. The bus ride was beautiful; we could clearly see the Chōmeigitake waterfall, the highest in Japan, from the bus. Though the snow limited visibility in April, I imagined how majestic it must be in the summer months (June - November).
The approach to Murodo was an unforgettable experience, with towering snow walls lining the route. It felt like stepping into a winter wonderland! The snow walls were incredibly high; the highest point this year is 14m.
Finally arriving at Murodo Station, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of people. However, venturing away from the crowds, I found a quiet spot to appreciate the full height and majesty of the snow walls. I even located the official "check-in" point marking the highest point of the snow wall.
From the rooftop observatory at Murodo Station, I had a panoramic view – this was where I saw the view from the live cam back at Tateyama Station. Murodo also has a hotel for overnight stays if you want to make the most of this winter paradise.
The Descend: From Murodo to Kurobe Dam
My descent began with a 10-minute ride on a trackless electric car from Murodo to Daikanbo. The views from the Daikanbo observatory were simply breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the Japanese Alps. From there, the Tateyama Aerial Cable Car ride, though short (7 minutes), was surreal, feeling entirely enveloped by snow-capped peaks.
Next, the Kurobe Cable Car took me down to Kurobe Lake, a short 15-minute walk from Kurobe Dam. Kurobe Dam's beauty was breathtaking. The views from the roof of the Kurobe Dam station are also supposedly stunning. I plan to return during the summer months to see the dam’s impressive water release.
The final leg involved a Kanetunnel Electric Bus ride to Ogizawa Station, marking the end of my incredible Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route experience.
