Tianzhou Ancient City: Where History Meets Modernity
My journey began in Tianyang County, home to the magnificent Tianzhou Ancient City. This isn't just any old town; it's the purported birthplace of the Zhuang ethnic group and the hometown of Wa Shi, a renowned female warrior who fought against Japanese pirates during the Ming Dynasty. Imagine my surprise when I learned that this historic site also served as a revolutionary base during the early years of the People’s Republic of China.
I passed through Tianyang on my way to the Bama Hundred Devil Cave, and stumbled upon this hidden gem. Tianzhou Ancient City is a massive cultural tourism project that seamlessly blends commercial, residential, and cultural elements. The city showcases traditional architecture, with courtyard houses, sacrificial altars, ancestral towers, and a Zhuang Museum all contributing to the atmosphere. Officially opened in April 2015, the city includes modern additions like Zijing Square and the Moon River Bar Street. It's a fascinating juxtaposition of old and new, a testament to China's ability to preserve its heritage while embracing progress.
The city's impressive size—covering 1500 acres—is a testament to its significance. With a population of 330,000, representing a diverse mix of ethnic groups including Zhuang (89%), Yi, Bai, Hui, and Naxi, Tianzhou is a microcosm of Guangxi’s vibrant multicultural tapestry. The city's rich cultural resources are readily apparent, from its ancient temples and traditional architecture to the sounds of Zhuang folk songs echoing through the streets. Although modern in construction, the city masterfully mimics ancient architecture. It’s so well done that you could easily mistake it for a film set!

Nanning: A Modern Metropolis with a Rich Cultural Heritage
From Tianzhou, my adventure continued to Nanning, the capital of Guangxi. This bustling metropolis is a testament to China's rapid economic development. As a predominantly Zhuang city with a diverse ethnic population, Nanning offers a unique glimpse into China’s multiculturalism—a stark contrast to the more homogenous population of Taiwan, where I'm from. The city's architecture is a stunning blend of modern skyscrapers and traditional buildings, creating a vibrant and unforgettable cityscape.
One of the highlights of Nanning was Qingxiu Mountain, a picturesque park within the city limits. Despite its relatively modest size, the park boasts stunning natural beauty, featuring 18 peaks, abundant subtropical vegetation, and even rare and endangered plants like the Antiaris toxicaria (also known as the "poison dart tree"). The park’s numerous koi ponds are another highlight, symbolizing wealth and good fortune in Chinese culture. The ponds are meticulously maintained, ensuring that the fish thrive even in the fluctuating weather conditions.
The city's commitment to integrating nature into urban life is evident in the beautiful Nanhu Ming Shu Park, where modern development coexists harmoniously with lush greenery. The city even offers night cruises on the Minge Lake providing breathtaking views of the city lights. Nanning's stunning transformation is a testament to China's remarkable progress. The pace of development in mainland China is, quite frankly, astonishing; a far cry from what I’m accustomed to.
Guangxi Museum: A Window into the Region's History and Culture
My trip culminated at the Guangxi Museum in Nanning. This incredible museum offers a comprehensive overview of the region's rich history and diverse cultures, from ancient artifacts to contemporary art. It’s an excellent place to further understand the history and culture of Guangxi.
