Unearthing Hidden Gems in Kaohsiung: From Retro Hotels to Coastal Charms
文章目錄

Kaohsiung, a vibrant port city in southern Taiwan, often gets overshadowed by Taipei. But let me tell you, this city is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be unearthed. From stylish, budget-friendly hotels steeped in history to breathtaking coastal attractions and unique transportation options, Kaohsiung offers a blend of old-world charm and modern delights that captivated me from the moment I arrived. As an American backpacker who's explored numerous Asian cities, I can confidently say Kaohsiung deserves a spot on every traveler's itinerary.

A Blast from the Past: My Stay at a Retro Chic Hotel

My Kaohsiung adventure began with a stay at a unique design hotel near the bustling Pier-2 Art Center. Opened in April 2024, this hotel is no ordinary accommodation. The building itself carries a fascinating history, having once served as a waiting room for port workers. Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time, with terrazzo floors, vintage marble wall patterns, and original washbasins whispering tales of Taiwan's past. It's a delightful blend of retro and modern, a testament to the city's evolving identity.

And the best part? The price. At just 2208 TWD, it felt like I'd traveled back to the prices of two decades ago! Finding a brand-new hotel with such incredible value in today's market is practically unheard of, especially compared to the 4,000-5,000 TWD or more you'd expect to pay elsewhere.

But the affordability doesn't compromise the experience. The hotel caters especially well to families, featuring spacious rooms with in-room slides – a dream come true for kids! They even offer harbor-view rooms and loft-style accommodations for larger groups. This thoughtful design, combined with the prime location just a three-minute walk from Pier-2, made it the perfect base for my explorations.

Exploring Pier-2: Art, History, and Harbor Views

Pier-2 Art Center is a must-visit for any art enthusiast. Comprised of three interconnected warehouses, the area is a vibrant hub of creativity, showcasing an array of installations, from playful Gundam figures to romantic heart sculptures. It's a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, whether you're a couple seeking a romantic escape or a family looking for a fun-filled day. And with regular weekend markets, there's always something new to discover.

A highlight of my Pier-2 experience was the Hamasen Railway Museum. Here, I had the unique opportunity to ride a miniature train – not a model, but a real, functioning train, albeit a very small one! It was a quirky and delightful experience, trundling along the tracks, taking in the harbor views, and receiving friendly waves from locals. It felt like a charming amusement park ride, sure to bring a smile to faces of all ages.

Coastal Delights and Culinary Gems: From Sunset Drinks to Rotating Bridges

Adjacent to Pier-2 is a must-visit restaurant for anyone seeking a chic dining experience. This harborside establishment, with its stunning exterior, offers both indoor and outdoor seating. I highly recommend booking an outdoor table for sunset, not only for the refreshing sea breeze and harbor views, but also for a front-row seat to the nightly spectacle of the Dagang Bridge.

At 7 p.m. sharp, this unique bridge, the only parallel rotating bridge in Taiwan, puts on a mesmerizing show. With synchronized lights and music, it's a captivating performance that draws crowds. But from my vantage point at the restaurant, champagne in hand, I enjoyed a VIP view, a smug observer of the bustling crowds below.

Exploring Kaohsiung's Transportation Gems: Light Rail Adventures and Ferry Rides

Kaohsiung's efficient and affordable light rail system made exploring the city a breeze. For just 35 TWD, I hopped on and off at various points of interest, including the Hamasen station, the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the British Consulate and enjoying panoramic harbor views. From there, a short ferry ride took me to Cijin Island, home to the historic Cijin Lighthouse, where I enjoyed a coffee with breathtaking nighttime harbor views. It was a truly magical experience.

Cijin Island: Tunnels, Churches, and Seashells

Cijin Island offers a delightful escape from the city buzz. A must-visit is the Cijin Star Tunnel, a former war tunnel transformed into a vibrant pedestrian walkway. Adorned with LED lights and colorful murals depicting underwater scenes, it's a whimsical journey, especially for kids. The tunnel also provides access to nearby attractions like the Cijin Lighthouse and the historic Cijin Fort.

From its charming retro hotels to its vibrant coastal attractions, Kaohsiung is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
