Getting There and Ticket Prices: A Hitchhiker's Guide to Kalajun
My adventure started with a surprisingly affordable ride-sharing experience. For just 20 RMB (around $3 USD), I secured a spot in a car heading to Kalajun Grassland. The ride was scenic, giving me a preview of the stunning landscapes to come. Upon arrival at the scenic area entrance, I found a bustling parking lot filled with both private cars and RVs. The ticket booth was a short walk away, and that’s where the adventure really began!

I chatted with the ticket attendant, a Uyghur woman who explained the meaning of the name, highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
My journey through the grassland included several stops:
- Shiquan Viewpoint: This initial stop offered incredible views and photo opportunities, including paid photo ops with adorable baby lambs.
- Viewing Platform with Yurts: Here, I enjoyed some light snacks like corn, eggs, and sausages while gazing over the vast expanse of the grassland and the canyons below.
- Xianhuatai (Flower Terrace): This stop involved a fun ride on a "magic carpet" (a motorized lift), providing amazing views of the colorful flowers and towering evergreens. A kind attendant even offered to carry my bag for me up the steep wooden walkway!
- Hunting Falcon Platform: This final stop offers some of the most breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains and lush grassland, even better than the Flower Terrace, according to my driver.
