Hey fellow travelers! Mark here, your American backpacker buddy, back with another exciting Asian adventure. This time, I explored the stunning prefectures of Wakayama and Tochigi in Japan, and let me tell you, it was a trip for the ages! From ancient pilgrimage trails to world-class theme parks and rejuvenating hot springs, these regions offer a diverse range of experiences that will leave you wanting more. So, pack your bags and get ready to explore the hidden gems of Japan!

Wakayama: Where History Meets Adventure

Wakayama, nestled amidst lush forests and breathtaking coastlines, is a haven for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. My journey began with a hike through the sacred Kumano Kodo, a network of ancient pilgrimage trails that wind through the mystical Kii Mountains. Imagine walking in the footsteps of emperors and nobles, surrounded by towering trees and cascading waterfalls. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of only two pilgrimage routes in the world recognized by UNESCO (the other being the Camino de Santiago in Spain). It's a truly spiritual experience that connects you to Japan's rich history and natural beauty.

After my invigorating hike, I headed to the vibrant Toretore Market, a seafood lover's paradise. This bustling market offers an incredible array of fresh catches, from succulent oysters to giant lobsters. You can even choose your own seafood and have it grilled right on the spot! Don't miss the chance to try a Kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl) overflowing with fresh sashimi and glistening sea urchin. The prices are incredibly reasonable, especially considering the quality and freshness of the seafood.

Toretore Market Highlights
Must-Try:Kaisen-don, grilled seafood, fresh oysters
Price Range:¥3000 (approximately $22 USD) for a large Kaisen-don
Tip:Go hungry and be prepared to be amazed by the variety!

Next up was Adventure World, a massive theme park that combines a zoo, safari park, aquarium, and amusement park all in one. This place is huge, covering over 800 square kilometers! It's home to the only successfully bred pandas in Japan, a definite must-see. You can also get up close and personal with other amazing animals, from feeding giraffes to interacting with dolphins. It's a fantastic place for families and anyone who loves animals and adventure.

Tochigi: Soaking in Beauty and Indulging in Royal Treats

After Wakayama's adventures, I journeyed north to Tochigi, famous for its stunning natural scenery and luxurious hot springs. My first stop was Kinugawa Onsen, one of Japan's top three "Bijin-no-yu" (hot springs for beautiful skin). The water is rich in minerals like iron, sulfur, and salt, giving it a slightly brownish tint and leaving your skin feeling incredibly smooth. I stayed at the Kinugawa Hotel Turtle Inn, a charming hotel that offers both traditional Japanese and Western-style rooms, each with its own private open-air bath. The highlight for me was the late-night snack: their signature tantanmen (spicy noodle soup) made with Hong Kong-style noodles. The perfect ending to a day of soaking and exploring.

Price Range:¥7400+ (approximately $54+ USD) per night for a double room with two meals

My Tochigi adventure continued with a visit to the breathtaking Nasu Highlands, known as the most beautiful forest in the Kanto region. This area served as a summer retreat and spiritual sanctuary for the Imperial family, and its tranquil beauty is easy to see. From hiking and biking trails to cascading waterfalls and lush forests, Nasu Highlands offers a rejuvenating escape into nature. And don't forget to stop by CHEESE GARDEN, famous for its royal-approved cheesecakes made with Tochigi's renowned milk. Speaking of milk, Tochigi is also the top producer of strawberries in Japan, and their Skyberry variety is a must-try. These giant, intensely red strawberries are bursting with sweetness and flavor. Visiting a local farm and indulging in all-you-can-eat strawberries is an experience you won't soon forget.
