Taiwan, a hidden gem nestled in East Asia, has always beckoned with its vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes. This isn't just a trip report; it's a call to all fellow adventurers to experience the magic I uncovered on my recent backpacking trip. From the bustling night markets of Taichung to the tranquil mountain air of Cingjing and Wuling Farms, Taiwan offers a unique blend of urban excitement and natural beauty that's sure to captivate any traveler.
Taichung: A Foodie Paradise and Cozy Stays
My Taiwanese adventure began in Taichung, a city renowned for its culinary delights. After settling into my pre-booked accommodation at Erbashu Lane Art Inn (a great find, by the way, just a 10-minute stroll from the famous Fengjia Night Market!), I made a beeline for the highly recommended WuMu yakiniku restaurant. The feast was unforgettable: a 3-person set with melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu beef and a divine Basque cheesecake for dessert.
Back at the inn, I was pleasantly surprised by the complimentary snacks and noodles, a welcome treat for any budget traveler. My deluxe twin room was spacious and spotless, complete with a relaxing bathtub. Erbashu Lane served as the perfect base for my explorations.
Cingjing Farm: A Breath of Fresh Mountain Air
The next morning, I joined a convenient day trip to Cingjing Farm, departing directly from the inn. The scenic drive through the mountains was a feast for the eyes, with early blooming cherry blossoms hinting at the beauty to come.
Our first stop was Feeling18, a charming spot for souvenirs. Then, we arrived at the iconic Old England Manor, a stunning Tudor-style building perched amidst the rolling hills. Standing there, gazing at the majestic mountain range, I felt transported to a European fairytale. The midday chime of the clock solidified this feeling. Next time, I'm definitely indulging in their afternoon tea!
Lunch was at Carton King, a unique restaurant where almost everything, from the tables and chairs to the decorations, was made of cardboard. A warming hot pot was the perfect remedy for the January chill.
Stop | Activity | Notes |
---|---|---|
Feeling18 | Souvenir Shopping | A great place to pick up local treats and gifts. |
Old England | Sightseeing | Stunning architecture and breathtaking views. Must return for afternoon tea! |
Carton King | Lunch | Unique dining experience with cardboard furniture. Hot pot recommended! |
Exploring Cingjing's Natural Wonders
With a full stomach, I embarked on an exploration of Cingjing Farm. The NT$200 entrance fee grants access to Green Green Grassland, the Skywalk, and the Small Swiss Garden.
Green Green Grassland was a delight, even without the lush greenery of summer or the full bloom of spring. I fed the adorable black-nosed sheep (they knew exactly what I was offering!) before rushing down to catch the sheep shearing show.
The Skywalk offered panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and blossoming cherry trees. It's a 1.5km downhill stroll back towards Carton King. Finally, the Small Swiss Garden charmed me with its vibrant flowers, a perfect end to the Cingjing portion of my day trip.
Fengjia Night Market: A Culinary Adventure
Back in Taichung, I dove into the vibrant energy of Fengjia Night Market, a foodie paradise with endless options for dinner and late-night snacks.
Sunrise to Sunset: A Day Trip to Fushoushan and Wuling Farms
After a day of rest, I was up before dawn for another exciting day trip, this time to Fushoushan and Wuling Farms. The 13-hour journey, from 6 am to 7 pm back in Taipei, promised a full day of exploring Taiwan's high-altitude beauty.
Witnessing the sunrise during my travels was a magical experience, painting the sky with hues of pink and orange, a perfect prelude to the day's adventure. A quick breakfast stop at 7-Eleven fueled us for the journey to Fushoushan Farm.
Farm | Altitude | Key Features |
---|---|---|
Fushoushan | 2100-2614m | Apple King tree (harvest in Oct-Dec), Tianchi (natural spring), scenic views |
Wuling | Information needed | Cherry blossoms (peak season mid-to-late February), black swans, peach blossoms |
Although it was a bit early for the famed cherry blossoms at Fushoushan Farm, the panoramic mountain views were breathtaking. The Apple King tree, boasting over 10 varieties of apples, was a sight to behold. We were lucky enough to spot some early blooming cherry blossoms, a tantalizing glimpse of the beauty to come during peak season.
A short drive took us to Tianchi, a pristine natural spring at an altitude of 2614m. The reflection of the sky on the still water was mesmerizing. Nearby, the Chiang Kai-shek Lodge, now partly a cafe, offered a glimpse into history.
Our final destination, Wuling Farm, was a highlight of the trip. Even though we were a few days shy of peak cherry blossom season, the early bloomers and the peaceful atmosphere were enchanting. The sight of black swans gliding across the water framed by blossoming cherry trees was a photographer's dream.
This trip to Taiwan was more than just a vacation; it was an immersion into a vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes. From bustling cityscapes to tranquil mountain retreats, Taiwan offers a unique and unforgettable experience. I urge everyone to add this beautiful island nation to their travel bucket list. You won't regret it.
