Unforgettable Hakodate: Hot Springs, Stunning Views, and All-You-Can-Eat Crab Legs!

Hey everyone, Mark here, your friendly neighborhood backpacker! I recently returned from an amazing trip to Japan, and I just have to tell you about Hakodate. This coastal city on the island of Hokkaido completely blew me away. Forget Tokyo and Kyoto – Hakodate is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, and I'm here to tell you why it should be your next Asian adventure!

Falling in Love with Heiseikan Shiosaitei Bekkan Kagetsu

Let me start with where I stayed: Heiseikan Shiosaitei Bekkan Kagetsu. Yes, it’s a mouthful, but trust me, it’s worth remembering. From the moment I walked into the lobby, I was captivated. The massive windows showcase panoramic ocean views that are simply breathtaking. I could have spent the entire afternoon just sitting there, soaking it all in.

The rooms are equally impressive, with various styles ranging from traditional Japanese tatami rooms to Western-style accommodations. I opted for the tatami room for the full Japanese experience. The subtle aroma of the tatami mats, the low chairs placed by the window with that incredible ocean view – it was pure bliss! And the staff? Top-notch. They even prepared my bed while I was out enjoying dinner.

But the real highlight was breakfast. Being right by the sea, fresh seafood is a must, and this hotel delivers. All-you-can-eat crab legs? Yes, please! Mountains of succulent sashimi? Don't mind if I do! And the mentaiko (marinated pollock roe) – oh, the mentaiko. A bowl of rice topped with that salty, savory goodness is the perfect way to start the day.

And the price? Unbelievably affordable. Around $200 USD a night in July for those views, that breakfast, and access to onsen (hot springs)? Sign me up!

Hakodate: More Than Just a Pretty View

Our journey continued to Yunokawa Onsen, one of Hokkaido's three famous hot spring resorts. Located just five minutes from Hakodate Airport, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing soak before heading home. The onsen town is bustling with shops and restaurants, and there’s even a charming shrine, Yukakura Shrine, worth visiting.

For those with a little extra time, the Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden is a fun and educational stop, especially for families. While it boasts over 3,000 plants of 300 different species, the real draw is the winter spectacle of monkeys bathing in the onsen. While the monkeys only take their dips in the colder months, you can enjoy the hot springs yourself in Yunokawa year-round.

A Five-Day Hokkaido Itinerary: From Asahikawa to Hakodate

This Hakodate excursion was part of a larger five-day Hokkaido adventure. We started in Asahikawa, visiting the colorful Furano Flower Fields and the incredible Asahiyama Zoo. Then, it was on to Jozankei Onsen, followed by Sapporo and its vibrant Tanukikoji Shopping Street. Finally, we made our way to Hakodate, taking in the stunning night view and exploring the onsen town. It was a packed but unforgettable trip!

Essential Tips for Driving in Hokkaido

For those planning a Hokkaido road trip, here are a few tips from my experience:

DocumentDescription
International Driving Permit (IDP)Ensure your IDP is valid. Japanese authorities may not accept an IDP if the underlying driver's license is expired. Renew your license before obtaining the IDP.
Japanese Translation of Driver’s LicenseBring this along with your IDP and passport.
Highway Toll Pass (Optional)Consider a "Hokkaido Expressway Pass" for unlimited toll road usage. Purchase this in advance through your rental car company. It’s significantly cheaper than paying individual tolls.
Full Insurance CoverageDon't skimp on insurance. Opt for the most comprehensive coverage available for peace of mind.
Register All DriversIf you have multiple drivers in your group, ensure all their licenses are registered with the rental car company.

For those not driving, consider Japan’s convenient luggage forwarding service. You can ship your bags directly from the airport to your hotel, allowing you to explore hassle-free. It’s a bit pricey (around $50-65 USD per bag), but the convenience is worth it, especially for families or those with multiple bags.

I hope this inspires you to add Hakodate to your travel list. It's a truly special place that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and delicious food. Don't miss out!
