Hey everyone, Mark here! I'm back with another thrilling chapter from my recent Southeast Asian backpacking adventure. This time, I'm sharing my journey from the enchanting city of Luang Prabang, Laos, to the adventurous hub of Vang Vieng. Get ready for some incredible sights, delicious food, and a few unexpected twists along the way!
Saying Goodbye to Luang Prabang and the High-Speed Rail to Vang Vieng
After a magical couple of days in Luang Prabang, it was time to move on. I had a fantastic driver who took exceptional care of me. Big thanks to him! I hopped on the new Lao-China high-speed railway from Luang Prabang station. Before boarding, I grabbed a quick lunch near the station – the perfect fuel for the journey ahead.
My lunch consisted of:
Dish | Price (Kip) | Notes |
---|---|---|
Pork Fried Rice | 45,000 | Slightly drier than Thai fried rice, but good |
Egg Pancake | 50,000 | Unique texture, similar to a fish cake |
Spicy Cold Noodles | 45,000 | Delicious, sour, sweet, and spicy |
The high-speed train ride itself was incredibly scenic, a comfortable transition between captivating cities. I took the train all the way to Vientiane, getting off at Vang Vieng.
Arriving in Vang Vieng: Mountains, Motorbikes, and More!
Vang Vieng greeted me with breathtaking mountain vistas. It’s truly a paradise for hikers and backpackers – the views from the train station alone were stunning. Getting to my hotel was a bit of an adventure. There's no ride-hailing app in Vang Vieng, so I had to negotiate with a local driver. The price was initially high, but I successfully haggled it down. (Lesson learned: always negotiate!) I eventually got a ride in the back of a pick-up truck, a truly memorable experience.
Here's a breakdown of my transportation costs:
Transportation | Initial Price (Kip) | Final Price (Kip) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Tuk-tuk to Hotel (Vang Vieng) | 150,000 | 130,000 | Negotiated price. No ride-sharing apps available. |
My hotel, Faraway Hotel, was lovely. It boasted a stunning mountain view, a small pool, and even a poolside room (though with only a curtain instead of a bathroom door!). I opted for a mountain view suite on the third floor – the panoramic views were simply amazing.
Vang Vieng Adventures: Blue Lagoon and Mountain Hike
I rented a motorbike for half a day (150,000 Kip, negotiated down from 160,000 Kip) to explore the famed Blue Lagoon and a challenging mountain viewpoint. Renting a motorbike is way more cost-effective than using tuk-tuks, especially if you're exploring multiple locations. The roads were… an adventure in themselves! The roads were rough and filled with potholes, so it was a bumpy but rewarding experience.
The Blue Lagoon: A Refreshing Dip
The Blue Lagoon was fantastic; it was bustling with people enjoying the water. I took the opportunity to relax and soak in the beauty of the lagoon. Many people were taking part in watersports activities.
Nam Xay Viewpoint: A Treacherous Hike to a Stunning View
The hike to Nam Xay Viewpoint is not for the faint of heart! The trail was incredibly steep, muddy, and required careful footing and the use of bamboo poles for support. It took roughly 30 minutes to ascend and 30 minutes to descend. The 360-degree view from the top (at 433 meters) was worth every drop of sweat and the fear of slipping. Wear sturdy shoes; I learned that the hard way!
Here's a summary of the costs for my Vang Vieng activities:
Activity | Price (Kip) | Notes |
---|---|---|
Motorbike Rental (Half Day) | 150,000 | Negotiated price |
Blue Lagoon Entrance Fee (per person) | 20,000 | |
Nam Xay Viewpoint Entrance Fee (per person) | 20,000 |
Vang Vieng Night Market: Korean BBQ and Lao Flavors
Vang Vieng's night market is a vibrant scene. I was surprised to find many Korean restaurants, seemingly catering to a large influx of Korean tourists. I indulged in some delicious Korean BBQ (including bulgogi, a Korean staple) and a spicy seafood stew, which was an amazing mix of flavors.
My Verdict on Vang Vieng: A Must-Visit for Adventurous Souls!
Vang Vieng is a fantastic destination, particularly for those seeking a balance of adventure and relaxation. The natural beauty is astounding, and the opportunities for outdoor activities are plentiful. Just be prepared for some challenging hikes and bumpy roads. But hey, that's all part of the adventure, right? It was one of the best experiences of my trip, for sure.
