Hey everyone, Mark here! As a seasoned backpacker with a passion for exploring Asia, I've seen countless breathtaking sights. But my recent trip to Guangxi, China, took my breath away. Specifically, the Tongling Grand Canyon and the charming town of Jiu Zhou. I'm here to share my incredible experience and encourage you to add this gem to your Asian adventure bucket list. Let’s dive in!
Exploring the Tongling Grand Canyon: A Journey to the Earth's Crack
Guangxi, located in Southern China, is an autonomous region primarily inhabited by the Zhuang people. However, it’s home to many other minority groups. The Zhuang people, often described as a matriarchal society, have a unique culture, which adds to the richness of this region. I learned so much about their unique traditions and the fascinating stories associated with their culture.
Entering the Tongling Grand Canyon, a natural reserve within Jingxi County, was like stepping into another world. The sheer scale of the canyon – a fissure plunging over 300 meters deep – is simply awe-inspiring. It truly felt like exploring a crack in the earth! The hike down wasn't easy, requiring a decent level of fitness, but the rewards were immense.
The canyon boasts over 2,000 species of plants, some dating back to the Jurassic period, making it incredibly biodiverse – second only to Xishuangbanna. The scenery is extraordinary, the scale is huge. Imagine a massive hole going down into the earth, with incredible rock formations and views of a magnificent waterfall. It’s an extraordinary experience. You'll traverse a series of stairs carved into the cliff face – a testament to the ingenuity of those who built it.
Feature | Description |
---|---|
Depth | Over 300 meters |

Waterfall Height | 168 meters (Asia's highest single-drop waterfall) |

The canyon seamlessly blends natural beauty with human intervention. While some sections are man-made, they enhance the overall experience rather than detract from it. Instead of starting at the bottom, which would be incredibly tiring, you begin at the top and gradually descend, taking in the stunning views. This approach allows you to appreciate the scale and beauty more fully. The highlight for me was discovering the huge cave hidden behind the 168-meter waterfall—Asia's highest single-drop waterfall!
The entire experience was about taking your time, not rushing. I stressed the importance of slowing down and savoring each moment. It reminded me of the importance of mindful eating; appreciating the taste and textures, rather than rushing to finish. Enjoy the journey, not just the destination!
Jiu Zhou Ancient Town: A Journey Through Time
After exploring the Tongling Grand Canyon, I journeyed to Jiu Zhou Ancient Town, a charming place that perfectly complements the natural wonders of the canyon. This town boasts a rich history and culture, mainly centered around the Zhuang people's traditions.
Feature | Description |
---|---|
Location | Jingxi County, Guangxi |
Notable Feature | Xiuhua Street (Embroidery Ball Street) |
Architecture | Traditional Zhuang houses, Wenchang Pavilion |
Cultural Significance | Rich Zhuang culture, traditional embroidery balls, unique architecture |
One of the most striking aspects of Jiu Zhou is Xiuhua Street, renowned for its traditional embroidery balls (繡球 - xiùqiú). These aren't just ornaments; they were historically significant as love tokens exchanged between Zhuang men and women. I learned that the intricate creation of these balls is primarily a women's craft, a testament to the traditional matriarchal society.
The town itself is immaculately preserved, creating a sense of stepping back in time. The houses are beautiful examples of traditional Zhuang architecture.
I also visited the Wenchang Pavilion, a four-sided, triangular structure with a rich history, beautifully situated on a small island. It provides a magnificent viewpoint overlooking the town and surrounding landscape.
E-quan: A Serene Spring and a Captivating Legend
My adventure continued with a visit to E-quan (鵝泉), a stunning spring often compared to the Butterfly Spring in Dali, Yunnan and the Xishan Ruquan in Guiping, Guangxi. The name literally translates to “Goose Spring” and it comes with a unique folk tale, which locals fondly shared with me.
The legend speaks of a woman who found two goose eggs, hatched them, and raised the goslings. One day, a storm caused a pond to collapse, creating the spring we see today. The woman was saddened by the goslings’ disappearance and died of grief, leading to the spring’s name. This quiet spring's beauty is accentuated by its scenic surroundings.
