Hey everyone, Mark here! As a seasoned backpacker with a love for Asian adventures, I recently spent an unforgettable time exploring Japan's stunning landscapes and cultural gems. This trip focused on the Matsumoto region, famous for its magnificent castle and breathtaking cherry blossoms. Prepare to be swept away by my incredible journey!
Matsumoto Castle and the Cherry Blossom Festival
My adventure started in Matsumoto, a charming city nestled in the Japanese Alps. I was lucky enough to arrive during the peak of the Matsumoto Castle Cherry Blossom Festival! I checked into a fantastic hotel with a highly-rated restaurant right next door. The restaurant served amazing home-style meals, and I especially recommend the ginger chicken katsu set – delicious! The hotel also had a delightful surprise: free DIY tea-over-rice for a late-night snack. What a treat!
A Day at Lake Suwa: Cherry Blossoms and Foot Baths
The next morning, I started my day with a brunch at "Coffee Aesthetics," a super Instagrammable café. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the freshly brewed coffee was amazing. Then, it was off to explore Lake Suwa! About a 10-minute walk from Kami-Suwa Station, I found myself surrounded by stunning cherry blossoms in full bloom.
The views along the lake were unforgettable, especially given Lake Suwa's history. I learned that its geyser once erupted as high as 50 meters, but hasn't done so in recent years. After enjoying the blossoms, I explored a local shop selling miso products – even miso ice cream! (It was smooth, but the flavor was just okay). I finished my Lake Suwa adventure with a relaxing foot bath under the cherry trees, a perfect way to end such a blissful day.
Later, I hiked to Tateishi Park, known for its stunning views of Lake Suwa and its role as a filming location for the anime "Your Name." The sunset from the park was simply breathtaking. While there's a bus from Kami-Suwa Station, the infrequent service led me to take a 30-minute walk which, while featuring some hills, offered more opportunities for exploration.
Nara-i Juku: A Journey Through Time
Day two was all about Matsumoto Castle and a visit to Nara-i Juku, a beautifully preserved post town on the Nakasendo highway. Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's twelve remaining original castles, boasts a magnificent five-story wooden structure. I spent the morning wandering through the Rope-Hand Street (Nawate-dori), though many shops were closed as it was early.
After purchasing a train ticket, I took a 50-minute train ride to Nara-i Station. Be aware: Nara-i Station lacks elevators, so travelers with luggage should plan accordingly! Nara-i Juku is remarkable for its well-preserved Edo-era architecture. I discovered a charming café hidden in an old building, where I enjoyed some delicious ice coffee and a special parfait. This quieter post town was a delightful change of pace. I even found cherry blossoms lining the Nara-i River near the Kiso-no-Ohashi bridge, made from 300-year-old wood.
Culinary Delights and a Final Farewell to Matsumoto
My culinary adventures in Matsumoto included a delicious meal at Miyo-da Matsumoto, a highly-rated soba noodle restaurant. The crispy tempura, curry soba noodles, and grilled miso were unforgettable. My final night involved a farewell visit to Matsumoto Castle, illuminated beautifully for the last night of the festival – even though the cherry blossoms were showing green leaves already!
I hope you enjoyed following me on this exciting journey. Remember to embrace the unexpected, savor the local flavors, and allow yourself to get lost in the beauty of Japan.
