I've been lucky enough to explore many amazing places in Asia, and recently I had the incredible opportunity to visit Sri Lanka, an island nation that's captivating, culturally rich, and stunningly beautiful. It's often described as a place that offers the best of both worlds; the mystery of the East and the romance of the West – a land that surpasses even Cambodia in its beauty and boasts more culture than the Maldives. Forget the snow; God gave Sri Lanka everything else!
A Nation's History and Its Modern Face
Sri Lanka, historically known as Ceylon, is a relatively small island nation (about twice the size of Hainan Island) located southeast of the Indian peninsula, separated from India by the Palk Strait. Its near-equatorial location gives it a tropical monsoon climate, meaning it’s always summer! With a land area of 66,000 square kilometers and a population of 22 million (as of 2022), it's a country brimming with history and vibrant culture.
Its strategic location on ancient maritime trade routes between East and West, including the route of Zheng He's voyages, meant that Sri Lanka was a prized possession. For over 150 years before its independence in 1948, Sri Lanka was a British colony, never incorporated into India. This colonial past significantly shaped Colombo, the largest city and de facto capital, transforming it into a bustling port city known as the "Crossroads of the Orient." While Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is officially the legislative capital, Colombo remains the heart of the country, where most government ministries and the presidential office are located.
Cultural Gems and Ancient Wonders
Sri Lanka's history stretches back millennia. Around 2500 years ago, Aryans migrated from North India, establishing the Sinhalese kingdom. The Sinhalese, meaning "lion" in Sanskrit, gave rise to the island's historical moniker, the "Lion Kingdom." The arrival of Buddhism, thanks to King Ashoka's son in 247 BC, deeply impacted the island’s culture, shaping its people and landscape. Today, over 70% of Sri Lankans practice Buddhism, a belief system clearly evident in many aspects of the country, particularly the Lotus Tower, a 350-meter-tall landmark in Colombo inspired by the lotus flower's symbolism of purity and wisdom in Buddhism.

Here are some highlights of my Sri Lankan adventure:
- Coastal Wonders: I rode the scenic coastal train from Colombo to Galle, a route that inspired the train scene in Spirited Away. The proximity to the ocean made it an unforgettable experience! Galle, a historic port city, is a must-see, while Bentota offers beautiful beaches perfect for relaxation and water sports.
- Whale Watching: Sri Lanka's narrow continental shelf allows for close encounters with the ocean's giants. Mirissa is a prime spot for whale watching, with opportunities to see magnificent blue whales.
- National Parks and Wildlife: Sri Lanka is home to diverse wildlife. I visited Udawalawe National Park, where I enjoyed thrilling jeep safaris, spotting elephants and other incredible animals. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was also a truly touching experience. Horton Plains National Park offered dramatic landscapes, with the World's End cliff providing breathtaking views.
- Tea Country: Nuwara Eliya, known as the "City of Light," is a picturesque hill station famous for its tea plantations. The lush green tea fields and the overall atmosphere created a serene escape.
Resilience and Rebirth: Sri Lanka Today
In 2022, Sri Lanka faced an economic crisis, heavily impacting its tourism sector. However, as of 2023, with a new government in place and the easing of pandemic restrictions, the country is showing strong signs of recovery. Its resilience, akin to a lotus flower blooming amidst adversity, is truly inspiring.
