Yokohama: A Surprisingly Fun City for Families and Couples!

Yokohama, often overshadowed by Tokyo, is a hidden gem just a short train ride away. As a seasoned traveler across Asia, I recently spent five fantastic days exploring this vibrant port city, and let me tell you, it's a must-visit for anyone traveling to Japan, especially families and couples. Forget the hustle and bustle of Tokyo; Yokohama offers a more relaxed atmosphere with a unique blend of modern and historic attractions. From thrilling amusement parks to serene gardens and a captivating Chinatown, Yokohama has something for everyone.

Getting Around Yokohama: Easier Than You Think!

Navigating Yokohama is incredibly simple, thanks to the Minato Mirai Line. This convenient train line has only six stops, but don't let that fool you! Each stop is packed with attractions, making it easy to hop on and off and explore at your own pace. A one-day pass for just 460 yen is a steal, offering unlimited rides and access to all the fun.

Beyond the Train: Land, Sea, and Air Adventures!

While the Minato Mirai Line is fantastic, Yokohama offers even more exciting ways to get around. For a unique experience, try the Sky Duck, an amphibious bus that transitions seamlessly from land to sea. You'll cruise past iconic landmarks like Yamashita Park and the Red Brick Warehouse, then splash into the harbor for breathtaking views of the city skyline and even a hidden statue only visible from the water. The cost is between 500 and 1000 yen, a small price to pay for this unforgettable adventure. And if you want to see Yokohama from above, the YOKOHAMA AIR CABIN is a must-try. This ropeway offers stunning panoramic views of the city as it glides across the skyline. A one-way ticket is around 1800 yen, offering a unique perspective on Yokohama's beauty.

Where to Stay: InterContinental Yokohama Grand

For my five-day stay, I chose the InterContinental Yokohama Grand, and it was the perfect base for exploring the city. Located right on the Minato Mirai Line, this iconic hotel, shaped like a sailboat, is a landmark in itself. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, perfect for families, with options for adding a crib. The hotel's amenities, including a pool and sauna, provided a relaxing escape after a day of sightseeing. And the best part? The Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel is right next door, offering breathtaking views from your room.

My Anpanman Museum Adventure

The Anpanman Museum in Shin-Takashima was a highlight of my trip. Even if you don't have kids, it's worth a visit just to snap a photo with the giant Anpanman statue outside. Inside, the museum is a three-story wonderland for children. The first floor offers free access to shops and restaurants, while the second and third floors are dedicated to interactive exhibits where kids can climb, slide, and play. The museum's focus on engaging both large and small motor skills makes it a truly enriching experience for little ones. The live Anpanman shows are a must-see, with kids dressed up in Anpanman costumes, creating a fun and festive atmosphere. I even caught the Anpanman bug and bought myself a costume!

I highly recommend adding Yokohama to your Japan itinerary. It's a city that surprised and delighted me, offering a unique blend of attractions and a laid-back atmosphere that's perfect for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.
