Escape the Summer Heat: My Matcha-Fueled Adventure in Uji, Japan
文章目錄

As a seasoned backpacker, I'm always on the lookout for unique Asian experiences. My recent trip to Uji, Japan, a charming town just outside of Kyoto, was a matcha lover's dream come true. After a night in a brand-new hotel in Kyoto, I hopped on the train to Uji, ready to dive headfirst into a world of green tea goodness.

A Town Painted Green: Exploring Uji's Matcha Delights

Uji is practically synonymous with matcha. Every street is lined with shops selling matcha-infused everything – ice cream, noodles, cakes, you name it! If you're a matcha enthusiast like me, this place is pure heaven.

Before you even start indulging in the culinary delights, take a moment to appreciate the town's history. If you have a 10-yen coin, take it out! The Phoenix Hall of Byōdō-in Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Uji, is featured on the coin. Snapping a photo of your coin with the temple in the background is a must-do. Also, check out your 10,000-yen note – the phoenix depicted on the back can be found on the roof of Byōdō-in.

Another picture-perfect spot is the Aji Pond in front of Byōdō-in. Crouch down and get a low angle shot of the temple reflecting in the water – it's truly mesmerizing.

After exploring Byōdō-in, exit through the back and cross the Asagiri Bridge to reach Uji Shrine. This ancient shrine houses one of Uji's seven famous springs. Many locals bring bottles to fill with the spring water, believed to be full of energy.

From the shrine, take a relaxing stroll along the Uji River back towards the main shopping street. If you have time, consider a boat tour on the river. The Asagiri Bridge, as its name suggests ("morning mist bridge"), offers stunning views, especially in the early morning when mist rises off the river against a backdrop of lush green forests. It's like stepping into a fairytale.

A Matcha Feast at Nakamura Tokichi

Uji is a city bathed in green, a haven for matcha lovers. It feels like coming home to a world of pure matcha bliss. My friends and I went all out, sampling a wide variety of matcha treats.

DishDescriptionMy Experience
Matcha SobaCold soba noodles made with matcha, topped with matcha powder.Refreshing, with a subtle matcha flavor and a hint of bitterness.
Matcha ParfaitA layered dessert with matcha jelly, mochi, red bean paste, whipped cream, and cake.A delightful explosion of textures and flavors, perfectly balanced and not too sweet.
Matcha/Hojicha KakigoriShaved ice with matcha and hojicha syrups.A refreshing treat with the distinct flavors of both matcha and hojicha.

The matcha soba was surprisingly complex. The noodles had a subtle matcha fragrance and a pleasant chewiness. It came with dipping sauce and a slice of lemon, adding another layer of flavor.

The parfait was a visual and culinary masterpiece. Each layer offered a unique texture and taste, culminating in a harmonious blend of sweetness and matcha goodness.

But my personal highlight was the kakigori, or shaved ice. The double syrup option (matcha and hojicha) allowed me to experience both flavors in one delightful bowl. The cool, icy sweetness was the perfect antidote to the summer heat.

Why You Should Visit Uji

Uji is more than just a matcha haven. It's a place steeped in history and natural beauty. The serene temples, the picturesque river, and the charming shops create an unforgettable atmosphere. If you're planning a trip to Japan, put Uji on your list. It's an easy day trip from Kyoto and well worth the journey. Trust me, your taste buds (and your Instagram feed) will thank you!
