Unlocking Sapporo's Secret Garden: A Summer Spectacle and City Delights
文章目錄

Hey fellow travelers! Mark here, your American backpacker buddy, always on the lookout for the next Asian adventure. This time, I stumbled upon a hidden gem in Sapporo, Japan – a mesmerizing summer spectacle that you absolutely can't miss! It's called the Jozankei Nature Light Festival, and it's tucked away in Sapporo's "secret garden," the Jozankei Onsen area.

Jozankei Nature Light Festival: A Symphony of Light and Sound

This isn't your average light display. Since 2016, they've transformed the natural forest and the iconic Futami Suspension Bridge into a magical wonderland of illumination. It's not just lights strung on trees; the ground itself comes alive with light effects, creating a truly immersive experience. As you wander through the illuminated trails, you'll hear the sounds of nature all around you – crickets chirping, birds singing – adding to the enchanting atmosphere.

The Futami Suspension Bridge is a highlight. As you cross, you'll witness a captivating kappa (a mythical Japanese creature) light display that seems to follow your movements. It's like taking a stroll with a friendly spirit! Beyond the bridge, the forest unfolds into a breathtaking showcase of light and shadow, creating a symphony for the senses.

The best part? This spectacle is free! However, there's a catch – you must be a guest at one of the hotels in the Jozankei Onsen area to gain access. They'll provide you with an entry ticket upon check-in. So, while free, it incentivizes supporting local businesses, which I'm all for.

My Luxurious Onsen Escape: Hotel Shogetsu

Jozankei boasts a wide selection of onsen hotels, but my choice was Hotel Shogetsu. And let me tell you, it's an experience in itself. Just an hour's drive from Sapporo (or a convenient shuttle ride with prior reservation), this hotel exudes an aura of mystery and traditional Japanese charm from the moment you arrive. The name "Shogetsu," meaning "crescent moon," is reflected in the hotel's design. The lobby ceiling mimics the phases of the moon, shifting from full to crescent throughout the day. Truly mesmerizing!

The rooms are incredibly spacious. The Premium rooms, designed for two people, offer a whopping 67 square meters (almost 720 square feet!) of pure luxury. Imagine having that much space in a hotel room! There's even a small living area. But the real draw is the onsen experience. Besides the stunning views from the main baths, you absolutely must reserve a private onsen. The "Meditation Bath," designed like a yurt with only soft moonlight filtering in, offers a truly unique experience. It's a place to unwind, reflect, and rejuvenate your soul.

Sapporo City Adventures: Tanukikoji Shopping Street and Crab Feast

After unwinding at the onsen, it's time to hit Sapporo's vibrant streets. Tanukikoji Shopping Street is a must-visit. It's a shopper's paradise, especially for drugstore finds and unique souvenirs. I recommend checking out the Nijo Market in the 1-chome area for a bustling seafood experience. And don't miss the iconic Don Quijote in the 4-chome area – it's a retail adventure in itself! Also, look for the charming Tanuki Shrine in the 5-chome area, dedicated to the raccoon dog god – it's a fun little cultural detour.

After a day of shopping, you've earned a feast, right? And what better place to indulge than Kani Honke, Sapporo's famous crab restaurant? This place is a popular spot for tourists, and for good reason. They offer a variety of pre-set crab courses, from the $48 USD entry-level option featuring snow crab hot pot and king crab tempura (among other dishes) to more elaborate selections. While it's touristy, the quality and experience are top-notch. The crab is incredibly fresh, and the flavors are exquisite. I highly recommend the snow crab hot pot – the broth is simply divine.

Conveniently Located: Hotel Forza Sapporo Station

For a comfortable and convenient stay in Sapporo, I recommend Hotel Forza Sapporo Station. It's literally next door to Kani Honke – talk about convenience! The location is superb, just a four-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station. The rooms are spacious, even the smallest ones at 25 square meters are larger than many hotel rooms you'll find in Tokyo. The breakfast buffet is excellent, with local specialties like Hokkaido corn rice and soft-serve ice cream. It's definitely worth adding to your stay. Plus, during the summer, prices are reasonable, starting around $65 USD per night.

From the enchanting lights of Jozankei to the bustling city life of Sapporo, this trip had it all. It's a perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and culinary indulgence. So, pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable Hokkaido adventure!
