Taiwan, a vibrant island nation, offers a plethora of exciting destinations. But if you’re seeking a blend of adrenaline-pumping adventure, heartwarming animal encounters, and culturally rich experiences, look no further than Chiayi! As an avid traveler across Asia, I recently explored this captivating city and I'm excited to share my thrilling and healing adventure with you.
The Ultimate Family Fun: Adventure and Animal Encounters
My Chiayi adventure began at the newly opened family theme park, touted as the best in Taiwan. What made this park so unique was its perfect balance of thrills and heartwarming moments. The park is divided into two distinct zones.
The first, the Magical Forest Adventure Zone, lived up to its name. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by a gigantic 180-degree swing. After gearing up, I was hoisted up to what felt like the fourth floor. The real test of courage came when I had to pull the release cord myself! The initial drop was a rush, but after the first swing, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the thrilling ride.
However, this was just the beginning. Next up was a ten-stage obstacle course high amongst the trees. There was no turning back – only forward! Each stage, whether it was crossing rope bridges or navigating narrow beams, was perched approximately 270 meters high. It was an exhilarating challenge, pushing me to conquer my fears while soaking in the breathtaking views. The grand finale was a zipline, the longest in Taiwan, whisking me from the final stage all the way back to the beginning.
After an adrenaline-filled morning, I ventured into the second zone: the Adorable Petting Zoo. Here, adorable animals awaited, eager for interaction. I had the chance to feed them, and even watched capybaras blissfully soaking in their own private hot spring. The highlight was the pygmy goat show, where these nimble creatures showcased their skills, gracefully traversing bridges and even climbing trees, following their keeper's instructions with remarkable precision. The bond between the keeper and the animals was evident, creating a truly heartwarming experience.
Lunch at the park's restaurant was a treat. The outdoor setting, surrounded by nature, offered a relaxing atmosphere. The menu featured a surprising variety, including both Western dishes and a local specialty – Sand Pot Fish Head. This savory dish, typically found in Chiayi's bustling night markets, was a delicious surprise.

Spooky Fun and European Elegance: Exploring Chiayi's Unique Charm
The fun continued beyond the theme park. Chiayi is known for its haunted house, the Minxiong Ghost House, a local landmark. While the ghost house itself might be a bit too spooky for some, I found a unique way to experience the city’s ghostly side – at a nearby café.
This themed café ingeniously transforms ghostly figures into adorable, quirky characters. The décor, from wall art to accessories, incorporates these playful ghost themes, creating a fun and lighthearted atmosphere. The café's drink menu features creative concoctions with names like Black and White Impermanents (inspired by Chinese mythology), King Yama (the god of death), and even a "Soul-Soothing Tea," perfect for calming the nerves after a visit to the actual haunted house. I tried the Black and White Impermanents, a delightful mix of milk and black fungus jelly, a treat for the taste buds. It was the perfect place to unwind after the day's adventures.
The following day, I discovered Chiayi's surprising European charm. My first stop was the Chiayi County Performing Arts Center, a sprawling 6.1-hectare complex. This free attraction boasts a theater, performance hall, and an outdoor performance terrace, all set amidst stunning, traditional Jiangnan-style architecture. The serene water pathways and picturesque courtyards and pavilions were perfect for capturing Instagram-worthy shots. The center regularly hosts performances, art exhibits, and market stalls, adding another layer of vibrancy to the experience. I enjoyed a relaxing coffee at the newly opened café, overlooking the pond adorned with blooming lotuses.
Finally, I visited a stunning Baroque-style castle, an impressive European-inspired structure. This "beauty-themed" tourist factory is built with materials imported directly from Europe, recreating authentic European architectural details. From the Bryan Garden Square to the Princess Fountain, every corner was a photographer's dream. The NT$200 entrance fee was redeemable for NT$500 worth of products, making it a fantastic value. The factory also housed a stylish restaurant and café, where I indulged in a delightful afternoon tea.
My Chiayi adventure was a delightful mix of thrilling escapades, heartwarming encounters, and cultural immersion. It's a destination that caters to all ages and interests, offering a unique blend of East meets West, traditional meets modern, and thrills meets tranquility. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking an unforgettable Taiwanese experience!
