Hey everyone, it's Mark here, your friendly neighborhood backpacker! I just returned from an incredible trip to Japan, and I'm bursting to share my cherry blossom viewing experience with you. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene beauty of Aomori, this journey was a feast for the senses. Get ready to be amazed, because Japan in spring is truly magical.

Tokyo: A City of Contrasts

My adventure began in Tokyo, where I stayed at a brand new hotel in Shibuya. Opened in August 2023, this hotel is a hidden gem, just a short 400-meter walk from the station. The location is perfect for exploring the vibrant Shibuya district. My room was on the 18th floor, offering breathtaking views of the city skyline. I even heard that on a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji! The hotel boasts a luxurious rooftop bar, the perfect spot to unwind with a drink and soak in the electric atmosphere of Tokyo. But the real highlight? The breakfast! They offer a unique dining experience with some dishes prepared omakase style. Yes, you read that right – omakase for breakfast! It was an unforgettable experience and I highly recommend checking it out. The hotel is certainly a five-star experience, a great way to treat yourself!

Cherry Blossom Extravaganza: Aomori's Hirosaki Park

Next, I ventured to Aomori, a prefecture in the Tohoku region, and visited Hirosaki Park. Let me tell you, this place is a must-see! It's been called one of those "must-visit-before-you-die" destinations, and I can absolutely see why.

Hirosaki Park is a cherry blossom paradise, with over 2,600 cherry trees in full bloom from April to May. The sight of Somei Yoshino and Shidarezakura cherry blossoms is truly breathtaking. But what makes Hirosaki Park so special? It offers three unique ways to experience the beauty of cherry blossoms.

ExperienceDescription
Hanafuda (Flower Raft)Witness the mesmerizing sight of fallen cherry blossom petals blanketing the surface of the moat, creating a stunning pink spectacle. As boats glide through the water, they disrupt the petals, creating ephemeral patterns like a natural flowing painting.
Cherry Blossom PathwayStroll along a 20-kilometer pathway lined with cherry trees, with the majestic Mount Iwaki, also known as "Tsugaru Fuji," as a breathtaking backdrop.
Night Cherry Blossoms (Yo-zakura)Experience the magic of illuminated cherry blossoms against the dark backdrop of the moat. The lit-up blossoms create a vibrant, almost fluorescent glow, reflecting beautifully on the water's surface. This is truly a photographer's dream!

Witnessing the "hanafuda" (flower rafts) was an experience like no other. Imagine a moat covered in a thick blanket of pink petals, with small boats gently drifting through, creating swirling patterns. It's like a living, breathing work of art. The cherry blossom pathway, stretching for 20 kilometers, offers breathtaking views of the blossoms with Mount Iwaki in the background. And the night cherry blossoms? Absolutely magical! The illuminated blossoms against the dark water create a surreal and unforgettable scene.

More Aomori Adventures

Beyond the cherry blossoms, Aomori has much more to offer. I visited the Aomori Museum of Art, a must-see for art lovers. The museum boasts an impressive collection of works by both Japanese and international artists, including renowned Aomori native, Yoshinori Nara. Don't miss Nara's iconic 8.5-meter-tall "Aomori Dog" and the 6.5-meter-tall "Miss Forest."

For a taste of local delicacies, I headed to the Hirosaki Rainbow Market near Hirosaki Station. This market is a foodie's paradise with incredibly affordable prices. I feasted on a variety of local snacks and dishes for under 1,000 yen! And speaking of food, Aomori is famous for its apples, and no trip is complete without trying their famous apple pies. I followed the Hirosaki Apple Pie Map and visited a local favorite known for its flaky, Danish-style crust and generous apple filling. It was the perfect ending to my Aomori adventure.

I hope my journey inspires you to explore the beauty of Japan in spring. Trust me, it's an experience you won't soon forget!
