All Aboard! Exploring Kyushu, Japan's Railway Paradise
文章目錄

Japan has always been a dream destination, and Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a fascinating railway culture that’s captured my heart. As an avid traveler, I've crisscrossed Asia, but Kyushu's charm is truly special. With its diverse landscape, from volcanic hot springs to lush forests and stunning coastlines, it's a paradise waiting to be explored, and the best way to do it is by train!

Why Kyushu's Trains are a Must-Experience

Kyushu has earned the nickname "Japan's Railway Kingdom" for a reason. With over 20 unique sightseeing trains, each boasting distinctive routes, designs, and onboard experiences, Kyushu offers a rail adventure unlike any other. These trains connect the seven prefectures of Kyushu, offering a slow and scenic way to soak in the region's beauty. For a train enthusiast like me, it's pure heaven! Forget the usual bullet trains; these specialized trains are an attraction in themselves.

Two Must-Ride Trains from Fukuoka to Oita

My journey began in Fukuoka, and I hopped on two incredible trains that took me to Oita Prefecture:

1. The Brand-New Kanko 816 Train

The Kanko 816 is a newcomer to the scene, having just launched in April 2024. This sleek, black train with gold accents exudes luxury. Its unique schedule adds to its allure – operating one-way from Hakata to Yufuin and Beppu on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, and returning as the "16" train from Beppu to Hakata on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Thursdays are its rest days.

The train's interior is just as captivating. The first car, inspired by Beppu's famous hot springs, features warm red tones. The second car, reminiscent of Yufuin's serene forests, showcases a long cedarwood bar and panoramic windows. The third car offers private compartments, including unique tatami rooms, perfect for families or groups.

The Kanko 816's onboard meals are a culinary treat, featuring locally sourced ingredients in beautifully presented Japanese bento boxes. The fare is around ¥15,000 for a regular seat and ¥19,000 for a tatami room. It’s a splurge, but worth it for a unique travel experience.

2. The Classic Yufuin no Mori

If the Kanko 816 is a bit beyond your budget, the Yufuin no Mori is a fantastic alternative. This iconic emerald-green train, now in its third generation, runs daily between Hakata and Yufuin/Beppu. It’s a favorite among travelers, so reserving your seats with your JR Pass is highly recommended.

The Yufuin no Mori offers a charming onboard experience with plush green seats, wooden interiors, and delightful surprises like conductor hats and uniforms for kids. The train also sells local souvenirs, snacks, and the famous B-speak roll cake – a must-try! The panoramic car offers breathtaking views of Kyushu's landscapes.

Exploring Yufuin: Beyond the Train

Arriving in Yufuin, I spent a delightful three hours exploring the charming Yunotsubo Kaido, a street lined with over 50 shops, craft stores, cafes, and restaurants. I indulged in the award-winning croquettes from Kin-Sho, filled with taro and wagyu beef – absolutely divine! The scenic walk culminated at Kinrin Lake, a picturesque spot known for its misty mornings and stunning autumn foliage.

Luxurious Coastal Escape in Beppu: GAHAMA Terrace

After the scenic train ride, I checked into the GAHAMA Terrace in Beppu, a luxurious beachfront resort. With only 31 rooms spread over 3,500 tsubo, this hotel offers spacious accommodations, many with private open-air baths and stunning ocean views. The hotel boasts both French and Japanese dining options, a bar, and complimentary coffee. It's the perfect place to unwind and soak in the coastal beauty. The price is around ¥45,000 per night, a worthwhile treat for a special occasion.

Navigating Kyushu with the JR Pass

For navigating Kyushu, the JR Pass is your best friend. There are three options: All Kyushu, North Kyushu, and South Kyushu. I recommend the All Kyushu JR Pass for its flexibility and convenience, allowing spontaneous exploration.

JR Pass TypeCoveragePrice (approx.)
All KyushuEntire Kyushu¥18,000
North KyushuKumamoto and north¥10,000
South KyushuKumamoto and south¥7,000 (3 days)

Exploring Miyazaki's Coastline: The Umisachi Yamasachi Train

Continuing my Kyushu rail adventure, I boarded the Umisachi Yamasachi train from Miyazaki to Nichinan. This two-car train, with only 51 seats, is highly sought after. It operates on weekends and holidays, offering a scenic ride along the Pacific coast.

Designed by renowned railway designer Eiji Mitooka, the train is crafted from local Obisugi cedar, giving it a warm, inviting atmosphere. The train's theme song adds to the enchanting experience. Inside, you can enjoy local treats like Miyazaki mango soda and Umisachi Yamasachi shochu. The journey is short, just 96 minutes, but filled with breathtaking coastal views.

Coastal Delights Near Nichinan

The Umisachi Yamasachi line offers some wonderful stops worth exploring. Aoshima Shrine, a short walk from Aoshima Station, is a beautiful spot for peaceful reflection. Further north lies a secluded beach, a nesting site for green sea turtles. Obijo Castle, another charming stop, offers a glimpse into the region's history and a chance to wander through its preserved streets.

Kyushu's railway network is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a gateway to unforgettable experiences. From luxurious rides to charming local stops and stunning natural beauty, Kyushu offers a unique journey for every traveler. I highly recommend adding Kyushu to your travel bucket list and experiencing its magic for yourself!
