Hello fellow travelers! Mark here, your friendly neighborhood backpacker, back with another Asian adventure to share. This time, I traded the bustling cityscapes for the serene beauty of Japan's Tohoku region during its breathtaking fall foliage season. While my five-day trip started in Aomori, the real magic unfolded in Akita, a prefecture known for more than just its adorable Akita Inu dogs.
Beyond the Puppy Love: Akita's Autumnal Tapestry
Having explored the vibrant hues of Aomori, I was eager to see if Akita's autumnal display could match, or even surpass, its neighbor's beauty. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! From the tranquil shores of Lake Tazawa to the dramatic gorges and hot springs, Akita painted a picture of autumnal splendor that captivated my senses.
Lake Tazawa, while not expansive, offers a unique charm. Its serene atmosphere and diverse flora, a mix of vibrant greens, yellows, and the golden hues of gingko and maple trees, create a spectacle of color. Whether you choose a leisurely boat ride or a bus tour around the lake, the perspectives shift dramatically, each offering its own unique charm.
Transportation | Approximate Cost (JPY) | Experience |

A Descent into Beauty: The Enchanting Sanzugawa Gorge
My Akita adventure continued with a visit to the Sanzugawa Gorge, a place whose name might initially give you pause. "Sanzugawa," in Japanese folklore, represents the river separating the living world from the afterlife. While the name might sound ominous, the gorge itself is anything but. Its beauty is simply mesmerizing.
Located near Mount Osore, one of Japan's three sacred mountains and spiritual sites, the gorge gets its name from its proximity to the Kawarage Jigoku, or "Kawarage Hell," a geothermal area known for its stark, otherworldly landscape. But before you even reach this "hellish" terrain, the Sanzugawa Gorge will steal your heart.
Standing on the Sanzubashi Bridge, suspended some 40 meters above the valley floor, I was treated to a breathtaking panorama of the gorge and the fiery hues of the fall foliage. The bridge itself adds a touch of whimsy, with statues of Jizo Bodhisattvas and fearsome guardians like Enma Daio, the King of Hell, and Taizan Daio flanking the entrance. It’s a fun little nod to the local folklore!
Kawarage Jigoku and Obuki: Embracing the Earth's Raw Power
While the Sanzugawa Gorge offers breathtaking beauty, the nearby Kawarage Jigoku provides a stark contrast. This geothermal area, with its steaming vents and barren landscape, lives up to its name, resembling a scene from another planet. The stark white and gray terrain, punctuated by the vibrant reds of oxidized minerals, creates a striking visual contrast. It’s a truly unique and humbling experience. And yes, there’s even a wild hot spring waterfall! A cascade of warm water tumbling down the rocks, perfect for a refreshing dip.
Continuing the geothermal theme, my next stop was Obuki, or the "Great Boiling Spout" in the nearby Oyasu Gorge. Walking through the V-shaped valley, I witnessed the earth's raw power as plumes of steam, reaching near-boiling temperatures, erupted from the rock face. It’s a powerful reminder of the forces that shape our planet.
Rest and Rejuvenation: Indulging in the Comforts of Ryokan Doroubei
After a day of exploring Akita's natural wonders, I sought refuge at the charming Ryokan Doroubei, a traditional Japanese inn located near the Oyasu Gorge. This historic inn, with over twelve generations of history, exudes a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
My Japanese-style room, complete with tatami mats and the soothing scent of cypress, offered a tranquil retreat. And the view! Some rooms boast stunning vistas of the Oyasu Gorge and the Great Boiling Spout.
But the true highlight was the onsen, or hot spring baths. With six different baths to choose from, including one crafted from 100-year-old Akita cedar, the experience was pure bliss. Soaking in the warm, fragrant water, surrounded by the rich aroma of cedar, was the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure.
The inn's hospitality extends to the dining experience as well. A delicious kaiseki dinner, featuring local specialties like kiritanpo nabe (rice cake hot pot), grilled fish, and the region's famed Inaniwa udon noodles, delighted my taste buds. And the breakfast, prepared by the owner herself, was a heartwarming start to the day.
